About the School

Okemos Nursery School is a child-centered, developmental program for preschool children. The program provides experiences in multi-media art, foreign language, music, drama, sign language, science, math, gymnastics, language arts, fine motor skills, and social and moral development.

Weekly lesson plans are provided to the parents to keep them aware of and involved in the children's daily activities. A nutritious snack is provided daily and often is in keeping with our weekly units.

Group experiences as well as self-selected activities are provided to encourage cooperation and self-discovery. The children learn to express their negative emotions verbally and learn through the reactions of others to accept responsibility for their own actions.

Our emphasis is on the development of the whole child.

The Facility

Both indoors and outdoors, it becomes immediately apparent that the Okemos Nursery School is unique in the area.

Our quarter-acre, fenced-in play area provides an excellent opportunity for every type of large motor activity.

Outdoors, our sandbox, swing sets, sledding hill, several pieces of large climbing equipment, and a child-size road complete with small cars and tricycles are available to the children on a daily basis. Imagination and creativity are sparked with each new experience.

Indoors, our art room, sand and water table, large motor equipment, housekeeping area, music and library room, science corner, and manipulative area offer unlimited opportunities for freedom of self-expression and discovery.

Specialty Areas

Expanding a child's world and creating opportunity for new experiences are exciting and rewarding endeavors.

Another way Okemos Nursery School accomplishes this is through various field trips during the year. Transportation and supervision are provided by both parents and teachers.

Our curriculum also includes specialty programs in French, traditional folk music, drama, creative dance, aerobics and yoga . The specialty classes are taught by area professionals in each respective field.

We feel that the inclusion of these programs as part of our regular curriculum helps to provide our students with an extremely unique and well-rounded preschool experience.

The Staff

Our teachers have more than thirty years of combined experience in the field of early childhood education and degrees in Elementary Education and Psychology.

Our classroom atmosphere is one of acceptance and warmth, which we feel is conducive to learning and enjoyment.

Our teachers are very enthusiastic and the children are encouraged to utilize their potential and pursue their own individuality.

Discipline is handled quietly and calmly with patience and fairness so each child grows to accept the responsibility for his/her own actions.
